Holiday Habits Project.
Introduction.
What is Tourism ? Tourism is a busy industry that looks
after the needs of people that want to travel for pleasure. Project aims.
The aim of this project is to find out which type of holiday is
most popular. To do this we must each find out the holiday habits of ten different
people by using a questionnaire with ten questions. Method
- In the lesson we wrote the good and bad effects of
tourism and the all round effects of tourism.
- We also had to find out how places benefit from tourism
and all about the tourist industry.
- At home we were to ask 10 people to fill in a questionnaire
on tourism. With the results of the questionnaire we have to make graphs
, charts and conclusions.
Tourism
is important because it brings in money for the tourist towns and provides jobs
for the local people. This is one of the reasons the Foot and Mouth crisis
,that has hit this country over the last few months, has been such a disaster
for the tourist industry because people can’t travel around or walk through
the country side and so cancel their trips. A lot of hotels ,cafes and other
tourist attractions have lost a lot of money as a result. In fact, our Year
7 was supposed to be going on a residential trip to Derbyshire, which has had
to be cancelled due to Foot and Mouth disease. We could not do many of
the activities planned because we were not allowed to walk around the farm.
The owner of the residential buildings will have lost a lot of money and so
will the community. Under normal circumstances the tourist industry is bringing
in lots of money every day. There are other disadvantages to tourism, for example,
pollution,( litter, car and noise) and the building of apartments and bed and
breakfast places for people to stay in ,can clutter up the countryside. Also,
as tourist spots become popular the price of property goes up, this can be a
big disadvantage because the local people can no longer afford the houses in
their area and they have to move away.
What is a Hypothesis? A Hypothesis is a statement
to be proved accurate or inaccurate by finding out facts. My hypothesis is that
most people will travel to their holiday destination by :-
- By aeroplane, because it is quick, fairly comfortable,
friendly and the service is fast.
- By ferry ,because you get to have a wonder while travelling
and see the sea views, you can by gifts and supplies.
- By car, because you are in control and you can stop
off where ever and whenever you want to.
- By train , because it is fast ( though mostly cannot
go over the sea)
Factors that will effect people’s holiday habits are factors
such as:-
- the age of the person e.g. An old lady of 60+ probably
will not go on a skiing holiday but is more likely to relax and enjoy sight
seeing. A seventeen year old girl is unlikely to walk around cathedrals
but is more likely to be attracted to an action packed package deal in the
sun.
- the interest of the person e.g. the sporty type is
likely to be interested in an activity holiday whereas someone who hates
being active is unlikely to choose this type of holiday.

Conclusion.
The results of the questionnaire have taught me
that people like the following:-
-
A resort that is beautiful with wonderful views.
- A nearby beach
- The majority of people questioned prefer sunny places
like Spain
- They like apartments with pools
- Most people travel with their family
Most enjoy food local to the area but also like tastes
they know and enjoy.
-
Most holidays are taken in the spring or summer.
- The most popular activity is relaxing, sunbathing
and sightseeing

- Most prefer to travel to destinations by plane.
- The majority of people questioned were between 18
and 45 years old.
My Ideal Holiday
My ideal holiday would be in a hot sunny place where I could spend all my
time with my mates doing whatever we wanted ,when ever we wanted to do it .I
would like a huge shopping spree with £3,000 to spend each and everything was
a ‘buy one get one free’ sale in all the designer shops ! With some days doing
all water sports and other activities such as paragliding, three person bungie
jumping etc.
- I will travel by first class Concorde because it’s
fast and luxurious
- I will make sure my luggage is on the plane with me
so it won‘t get lost .
- I will get to the site by cable car to see all the
views.
- I will take my best friends with me and we would all
share a large bedroom in our luxury apartment that will have a Jacuzzi and
Jamie Oliver to cook and create non alcoholic concoctions for us.
- ’ Hear Say’ and Robbie Williams would be performing
for us each evening and we would all, of course, become the best of friends!
Since this ideal holiday is unlikely to happen for a year or two, I will
continue to enjoy the family holidays in Spain and France.
Evaluation
If I could do this again I would have added ‘cars’ on
the transport question in the questionnaire, as Mr Hinchcliff missed that out
and a lot of people use their car for holidays. I liked my ideal holiday and
wouldn’t change that . I thought that the graphs that explained the results
made it easy to understand . I learnt two new words, ‘Hypothesis’ and ‘Factor’
and how to use them in geography and I learnt how important tourism is to our
country . I have enjoyed doing this project and feel I have learnt a
lot.
