Dear Parents

You may be aware that in recent years, research has made links between lack of water and learning. Researchers have found that dehydration can lead to the brain becoming increasingly inefficient as the day progresses; learning is impaired as mood and concentration deteriorates: attitudes, behaviour and motivation and irritability can set In.

Water is an instant 'brain boost' -it heightens energy, improves concentration and mental and physical co-ordination. At Horbury School we want to optimise learning and enhance academic skills. We believe that students need to be in the best physical state for learning in order for the brain to take in and process new information.

We are therefore encouraging students to drink water as and when needed in lessons -Health and Safety rules permitting. Currently experts suggest we need between 5 and 8 glasses of water a day [1.5 litres] taken regularly in small quantities. We are particularly concerned that many children are drinking fizzy drinks and sugary squashes, which can exacerbate dehydration.

Many schools have found that the safest and least disruptive way to access water is for each student to bring a clear sports bottle, or clear bottle with screw-on lid.

  • Water bottles can be refilled at break and lunchtime.
  • Students may only fill up their water bottles at designated places within school.
  • Please note, water will be the only drink students are allowed to take into lessons.
  • Students must not share their water bottles with others.
  • Each department will publish 'Water Rules' to remind students what is expected of them,

We hope that you will recognise the importance of this initiative and encourage your child to bring a bottle of water each day. Thank you for your co-operation.

Yours sincerely,

P. Warren
