Cocaine
is a white powder obtained from the leaves of the coca plant and is a
powerful
"stimulant" , which has similar effects to amphetamines.
Soluble
cocaine is sometimes injected, possibly mixed with heroin (this mixture
is
sometimes called 'Speedball') but the usual method is for a small amount
(usually
called a 'line') to be sniffed or 'snorted' up the nose through a small
tube and is
absorbed into the blood through the thin membranes in the nose.
However,
more recently a smokeable form of cocaine called "crack" has
appeared.

Cocaine / Crack History
Andean Indians have been chewing on coca leaves (which are the raw ingredient
for cocaine production) for over five thousand years. The rest of the
history is even more surprising.........

Cocaine / Crack Effects
Find out a bit more from Mike, the "talking head". Mike mentions
hallucinations. If you aren't sure what these are, click "here"
As
with amphetamines, cocaine produces feelings of well-being, mental sharpness,
reduced appetite and great physical strength - it's another "upper"
.
Cocaine / Crack Dangers
There's a bit of background about the risks "here", but this
is a summary table:- Regular users may appear
extremely
nervous
depressed
excitable
paranoid
confused
exhausted due to lack of sleep, or even
dead from a heart attack (rarely)
These effects may all disappear once use is stopped, however a paranoid
mental state may be irreversible and permanent. Repeatly snorting cocaine
may also damage the membranes in the nose and the structure separating
the nostrils.
Cocaine
/ Crack and The Law
Cocaine in all its forms are "Class A drugs". It is illegal
to produce, supply or possess the drug. It is also illegal to allow
premises to be used for supplying or producing cocaine.
A
very serious problem with Cocaine (and especially "Crack")
is that it's associated with violence, as suppliers fight to keep others
off their selling area, or pitch. Recently the government suggested
that up to 80% of thefts, burglaries and robberies in this country were
committed by drug addicts - presumably trying to fund their next fix.
