The following table is taken from the Edexcel GCSE ICT syllabus:-

LO5 Use major applications packages to solve problems and describe their purpose and key features.

Word processing:

editing, cut and paste, formatting, spellcheck, mail merge.

Database:

record, field, key field, file, sorting, searching (including use of AND, OR and NOT), updating, reports.

Spreadsheet:

cell, row, column, formulae, recalculation, replication, cell format, graph plotting.

Desktop publishing:

frames, fonts, text size, styles, import of text and graphics, sources of graphics, resizing of graphics.

Graphics:

drawing, painting, CAD, bitmapped images, vector graphics.

We are going to produce a web site that demonstrates your knowledge of these features.

This assignment will be broken down into the following sections:-

    • Planning
    • Implementation
    • Evaluation

Planning

Produce a thumbnail diagram of the pages that you will have on your web site. Here is an example of a thumbnail diagram:-

For each page, you should show:

  • The name that you will save the page as (this should be shown above the thumbnail – in this case it is "index.htm")
  • The Title
  • Any sections of text, name fonts, sizes and colours
  • Any images
  • What links will appear on your page, and where will they go.

Implementation

In this section we will actually produce our web pages.

  • Create a new folder inside your GCSE ICT folder, name it "Applications". Save all the files for your web pages inside this folder.
  • Load Dreamweaver
  • Use "Windows, properties" to open the properties inspector.
  • Use "Insert Table" to add a table to your page. You may find that tables are a good way of displaying information. The table can have the border set to "0" so that it doesn’t actually show on your web page, but still controls the layout of the page.
  • Be consistent in your choice of fonts and styles. Always use the same colours and sizes for headings, text etc.
  • Choose your colours and combination of colours carefully. (Have a look on the school web site, GCSE ICT section for a link to high contrast colours)
  • Use images wherever appropriate.
  • Save Early, Save Often!

Evaluation

Add another page to your web site, called "evaluation.htm" Try to answer all of these questions in detail:-

  • Look back at the specification from the Syllabus, will you be able to find out every fact from your web pages?
  • How well does your web pages communicate the information that they contain?
  • Is there anything that you would do to improve the presentation?
  • What do you think is the best feature of your web pages? Why?
  • What can be improved? Why?

Once you have completed your website, printout each page and bind them with an attractive front cover. The cover should have your name, a title, and the subject. The date should be shown as "October 2002" Have a look at the poster in room 24 about how your document should be assembled.

Homework (Wednesday’s lesson to be handed in on Thursday)

Look at the features that are listed for a spreadsheet.

Attempt to define each feature in at least one sentence.

I would like this work completed as a hard copy, preferably word processed.

You may find the "Strict" area of the school web site useful when you complete this homework.
