What is a Lookup?

When we input data into a database, the values we are entering are often part of a small list of values, for example the field might contain a day of the week. It is much easier to use a list of values because it involves less typing and is far less likely to result in a spelling mistake!

Try the two methods here, which do you prefer?

 

In our Timetable database, we use numbers to represent the days of the week. Here are some instructions to help you set up a lookup list for a field.

When we define a table in Access, we can setup "lookup" values like this:-
