Resources

The following resources have been provided by Glenn Taylor. If you wish to comment on any of them, please email him directly on gaataylor@blueyonder.co.uk

AccessIntroLesson.doc (22kb)
Crude (!) lesson notes for an intro to Access. Uses results.mdb.

CreateDBExercise.doc (16kb)
CLAIT-like exercise for reinforcement of ideas

CSVImportExercise.doc (23kb)
Used at KS4 for importing data from a CSV file to Access (Tends to be useful for AQA Board-Set assignment).

Y8OutdoorPursuits.doc (32kb)
Another CLAIT-like exercise

OutdoorPursuits2.doc (52kb)
Total reworking of the previous to illustrate/demonstrate a multi-table database. We use this in Y9.

Y8CreateExercise.doc (31kb)
Yet another CLAIT-like exercise.

Y8QueryDesign.doc (22kb)
Pen & paper exercise to introduce one means of coping with query design. The work we do leads up to the AQA GCSE short course and its Analysis->Design->Implement->Evaluate methodology. Pupils tend to be poor at the Design stage and don’t latch onto the fact that a database design includes query and report design as well as table design. Specifying a query in advance of implementation is not easy for them and this is a way of specifying a query using an “implementation-free” method.

Y8SwimmingClub.doc (22kb)
This exercise follows on from a classroom discussion where we have identified a few uses that a swimming club secretary might need a database for. From these needs, we brainstormed the fields that would be essential for the db to fulfil the secretary’s needs. Once the table had been specified, girls were given the task of each creating the table and adding 10 records (You do members 1 to 10; you do 11 to 20 etc. around the class). These were emailed to me, edited for “stupidity” and merged into one large database table. This exercise was what happened next.

Mergex.doc, (23kb)
MergeLetter.doc (23kb)
Exercise to introduce mailmerging for producing student “reports”. Pupils need to be shown first. MergeLetter.doc is the resulting letter and the exercise uses results.mdb.

DatabaseExercise.doc (23kb)
Simple exercise to be used with mammals.mdb.

MusicDept.doc (56kb)
This needs a complete rewrite! It attempts to go through the stages of design (including test data) and implementation of a system to help with in-school peripatetic music lessons. Not for the faint of heart!

DatabaseTableDesign.doc, (25kb)
DatabaseFormDesign.doc, (22kb)
DatabaseReportDesign.doc (38kb)
Templates for use at the design stage. Not perfect (esp. the report one), but better than a poke with a sharp stick. I’ve also added some spreadsheet ones too, including one for A3 printing.
